A Nigerian, Freeman Osonuga, 30, has been shortlisted along with 37 others to travel to space. Osonuga, a Medicine and Surgery graduate from Olabisi Onabanjo University, was selected through the Rising Star programme, which launched at the One Young World Summit 2014 in Dublin.

The programme invited both One Young World Ambassadors and outstanding members of the public aged between 18-35, to nominate themselves to take on the trip of a lifetime.

Osonuga, a 2015 WIRED Innovation Fellow, is the only Nigerian on the programme hopeful to fly to space. He will be speaking at the WIRED 2015 conference in October, in London.

In 2014, at the Peak of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, Osonuga worked as a volunteer with the African Union team of Ebola responders for six months in Sierra Leone. The flight to space is billed next year.
